Luckily she said she didn’t mind because “it’s not like she’s a celebrity” – which is when I really wanted to tell her that she most definitely IS. I mean anyone in the blogging-paleo-crossfit-food blog lover world would agree with me, right?! She’s got a following. And she’s written books. And she’s basically just awesome. So I fan-girled and got all nervous to talk to her. But she’s super sweet and totally just went with it. Don’t you love when people are just as cool in person as they are in your head?
Before I get ahead of myself, maybe I should start from the beginning.
Last week she had posted about the grand opening of a new Barre Forte studio that I had been wanting to check out since it’s by my work, and as it turns out, she was going to be at one of the free classes they were offering, which also happened to be the one I was attending!
So after the class, I got to meet her. Cue nerves.
You can check out Juli’s take on the class here.
Funny story – before I actually met Juli I was talking to her best friend about how strange it felt because I knew what Juli looked like but she obviously had no idea who I was – even though I only knew about the event because of her. You almost feel like it’s stalker-ish knowing so much about someone when they have no idea who you are. Can you say awkward much? Luckily, her friend was super sweet to introduce me before I could feel like a total weirdo introducing myself.
Anyway, she doesn’t know it, but Juli definitely inspired and reminded me why this little blog of mine means so much to me. If you’ve never read PaleOMG – well, then first of all, you’re missing out and you should head on over there to check it out – but second, the thing I love most about it, is that Juli is 100% real, all the time. Yes, the blog includes a ton of recipes and workouts and even a fun fashion round up every week – but at the heart of the blog, is Juli, and it’s pretty obvious (especially after meeting her). She shares her life and talks to her readers (through her blog) like you’re her best friend. Many blogs only talk about the recipe they’re sharing, which totally works if that’s your thing, but I think the reason PaleOMG is so successful and has such a large following is because of the connection Juli has built with her readers. She stays true to who she is and doesn’t hold back – personally, I think that’s pretty awesome.
When I think about what I want, my goals for the future, and the passion that initially started Healthy A La Mode, I am reminded of that same mentality. When it comes down to it, the one thing we will always have is our authenticity. So why choose to be anything but our true selves? Not everyone is going to like it, but who cares? It isn’t your job to please everyone. And at the end of the day, you aren’t going to be happy trying to do so.
Right now, I may not have the perfect camera. Or be able to take pictures in the best lighting. But that doesn’t mean I can’t still share my passion with the world. And that definitely doesn’t mean I can’t still be me, even when things aren’t quite the way I want them – yet ;)
So thank you, Juli. For reminding me to always stay true to myself. And please – keep doing your thing, because my mornings wouldn’t be the same without reading your daily post!
PS – I absolutely loved the class and have already started making it part of my morning routine before work!
