There’s a saying that goes, “if you want to be successful, find someone who has what you want and do what they do,” [Tony Robbins]. And while I agree with this in a lot of ways, there is one way in particular that I don’t. But let me get to that in a minute.
How often do we flip through a magazine, see pictures on the internet or notice a person in our day to day world who seems to have the perfect body we’re looking for with seemingly no effort. Well let’s make note of a couple things right off the bat: as much as we’d like to believe our situation is different and it’s harder for us then it is for anyone else, that’s just not true. We’re all working our booties off [no pun intended!] to get where we want to be and we are all faced with struggles, though they look different to each person. Let’s also note that while you are sitting on the couch eating a donut and reading said magazine article, that chick in the magazine probably did put in a little effort to look that way.
And that’s where I come back to the quote. If someone has the success you want, figure out what they are doing, and do it! But – let me tell you what that does not look like. That does not look like dropping everything you are doing and following their fitness and health routine to a T. Wait, it doesn’t? No! And you know why? Because you are not them!
Let me put it in other terms. I have a girlfriend who loves to run. She can run miles and miles and feels like it’s the best way for her to get out of her own head. And you know what, that’s great. But ask me to run for miles and you might as well ask the sun to not come up. I tried to be a runner, honestly I did. I even told myself I liked it for a few years. But then I found HIIT workouts. And realized that I could get in my cardio workout a different way. It took two seconds for me to say goodbye to running and finally admit how much it bored me! Yuck! But anyway, lesson learned was that although we can follow the same principle, it is important for my girlfriend and myself to each figure out what works for us so we will stick with it.. Cardio, yes. But how you get in that cardio? That’s for you to decide.
